Project Overview

Launched by Vodafone Idea Foundation, Jaadu Ginni Ka (JGK) is a financial literacy program designed to empower underserved citizens—especially rural women—through engaging, hyperlocal education. By combining storytelling, local languages, and community outreach models, JGK enables informed financial decision-making across India.

The Problem Statement

In India, financial illiteracy is a silent barrier to empowerment. With fewer than 30% of adults considered financially literate, millions are left vulnerable—unable to make informed decisions about saving, borrowing, investing, or using digital finance tools. This gap perpetuates poverty, dependency, and digital exclusion, especially among rural and underserved populations.

Background

Launched in 2017 by the Vodafone Idea Foundation, Jaadu Ginni Ka (JGK) set out to change the narrative by making financial education accessible, engaging, and relevant. Using hyper-local content in 10 Indian languages and interactive training methods, JGK targets underserved citizens—particularly women—with tools to understand money management, digital transactions, savings, insurance, and credit. The mission: empower citizens with financial knowledge, one rupee and one story at a time.

Low Financial Literacy

Most adults lacked awareness of basic concepts like budgeting, interest rates, and financial security.

Gender & Digital Divide

Women, especially in rural areas, were excluded from the formal financial system due to lack of access and awareness.

Language & Cultural Barriers

Traditional financial tools and platforms ignored linguistic diversity and local narratives.

Research & Planning

The foundation adopted a grassroots approach, crafting a strategy that was scalable, culturally rooted, and inclusive.

  • Identified key financial knowledge gaps in rural and low-income urban populations
  • Partnered with CRISIL Foundation to develop content and impact metrics
  • Created hyper-localized, story-driven modules delivered in 10 Indian languages
  • Selected a dual delivery model to ensure both wide reach and deep impact

Execution

Jaadu Ginni Ka deployed two complementary models to spread financial knowledge across India. The first, known as the Sath-Sath or Cascade Model, involved training Master Trainers who then passed on their knowledge to local communities. This approach enabled the program to conduct over 1,800 training sessions across 15 states, fostering peer-driven learning and trust-based outreach. The second model, called Gali-Gali Gaon-Gaon or the Mobile Van Model, featured vans equipped with audiovisual content and expert educators. These vans traveled through 29 districts across 21 states, reaching more than 1.4 million citizens through over 5,000 interactive sessions.

Key Features:

  • Hyperlocal Language Modules

Training conducted in 10 Indian languages to ensure inclusivity.

  • Mobile Vans with On-Ground Experts

Reaching rural areas with no internet access or formal training centers.

  • Gamified & Visual Tools

Animations, games, and storytelling used instead of jargon or lectures.

  • Success Tracking via CRISIL

Quantified outcomes with data on confidence, behavioral change, and inclusion.
